These photos were all taken in the city of Tacloban on the island of Leyte in the Philippines. Tacloban was one of the most badly damaged cities during typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan last November.
The photos in this post were taken in a barangay called Magallanes in Tacloban. Magallanes is right on the ocean and the storm surge from the typhoon destroyed nearly all of the houses.
The people you see cleaning up the debris were all part of a “Cash-for-Work Cleanup” program sponsored by the Buddhist Tzu-Chi Foundation. This foundation paid as many as 10,000 local residents a daily wage to clean up the city after the typhoon.
