The Horror of Cycling Into Cebu City

Memories of Siquijor to keep me motivated while cycling into Cebu

11:25 a.m. Cebu City
A lot has happened very quickly in the short time since the Aloha Pink House. The town of Carcar was only about 40 kilometers from Cebu City, but those 40 kilometers might as well have been 400. That’s standard for whenever you try to cycle into or out of a major metropolitan center. I had hoped that the traffic …

Cat at Fort San Pedro

Fort San Pedro in Cebu City is a popular place for tourists to visit. It is a triangular fort made of stone walls that dates back centuries. It costs 30 pesos to go inside. I surprised myself by enjoying my visit to this fort very much. You can take pictures of the cannons and the stone walls and such things. But you can also walk …

Pony Cart in Cebu City

There are many horse carts like this one in downtown Cebu near the Carbon Market. I don’t think they are used as transportation per se but as a fun thing for locals and tourists to do. I think they follow a set route from here around a circuit and back again. I could be wrong about that. It’s possible they actually take people to specific …

Photo Post: Dogs vs. Kitten

I spotted this kitten clutching onto this tree with all its strength, and I assumed it had just climbed up there for fun and was now stuck. This tree has a very hard bark, and it was clearly very difficult for this kitten to hold on. I was amused by its predicament, and I started snapping some pictures. Then, suddenly, the kitten slipped and fell …

Begging Children in Cebu

A lot people sleep on the streets in the old downtown area of Cebu City. Most set out a strip of cardboard or some thin plywood to make a bed. These children came up with the idea of sleeping in a traffic island, where many pedestrians wait for the lights to change. They set out a little cup to ask for change. They would be …

Internet cafe in Cebu City. They charge 10 to 12 pesos per hour, which is about twenty-five cents US. It’s one of the more pleasant places I’m stumbled across, though there is very little elbow room and when the young gamers storm in, things can get a tad annoying.

A Morning Stroll in Cebu City

Selling Breakfast Snacks in Cebu City

It was pretty early in the morning in Cebu City when I took this picture – around 6:45 – and there weren’t many people on the streets yet. This man was selling some kind of breakfast snack. I didn’t get a chance to look inside the buckets, so I don’t know what it was. Just a couple of hours later, this sidewalk was crowded with …

A Stroll Through the Taboan Market in Cebu City

Some Dangerous-Looking Dried Fish

The Taboan Public Market is a small market in Cebu City in the Philippines. I walked over that way one morning and snapped a few pictures. The outside of the market was ringed by a series of stalls selling dried fish. Everyone was very friendly and encouraged me to buy some fish. I had to explain over and over again that, coming as I did …
