I am a Canadian, and I am currently traveling through Asia with a touring bicycle. These are stories and pictures from my trip.
US Naval Airbase in Guiuan and Calicoan Island
Two days have passed since I wrote about visiting Lourdes and Jessa on the Hollywood Jetty. The first day was spent on my bike exploring the area around Guiuan. My main reason for doing this was to see the large abandoned American airport near the town. I had been informed that it was very near the town and to get there, I just had to …
A Family Visit on the Hollywood Jetty
Peaking out the window of my hotel room’s bathroom this morning, I was greeted with clear blue skies. That’s great after so much rain. However, as in life, the change in weather brings bad as well as good. It was sunny yesterday, too, and the heat was hard to deal with and retain a “sunny” disposition. I don’t imagine the heat will be any friendlier …
Cycling to Guiuan, Samar
I didn’t have a chance to see my hostess from the hotel of videoke horror before I left. As I went downstairs to take a shower in the common bathroom and such things, I had to pass the kitchen, and though many people said good morning to me, it seemed that my hostess was avoiding me. Quinapondan and a Night of Videoke Torment

After breakfast, I grabbed my camera and headed out into the town. I brought all my …
A Night in Amambucale, Samar
I made the snap decision to head for the Guiuan peninsula on Samar before heading south and eventually out of the Philippines. I had a vague idea of going up the east coast of Samar and then crossing over the interior mountains and doing a loop back to Leyte, but a bum right knee has caused me to rethink that idea. I will probably go …
A Walk Down Copra Street on a Sunday
Sundays are very quiet days in the Philippines. Most businesses are closed, and I found all the copra warehouses closed and the streets empty of trucks. That isn’t to say that the streets were without life. There were quite a few people on that street and as I made my way along it, people asked me to take their picture and I stopped and took …
Photo Walkabout in Tacloban
On my boat rides to and from San Antonio, I noticed an interesting stretch of coastline in the northern part of Tacloban. There were two ornate churches there plus a lot of houses built on stilts out over the water. I decided to go there with my camera and see if I could walk around and take some pictures.
Before I went, I stopped at my …
