The Cycling Canadian »

March 11, 2011 – 7:21 pm

I admit it. This picture was taken a few years ago, but I think I still look vaguely like that. Depends on the day (and the time of day). And today, just before I uploaded this picture, an Indonesian English student told me how much she liked my nose. I heard that a lot in Indonesia. Apparently, a large nose like mine is a good …

Exploring Fulong Beach (Day 2 of 3)

July 22, 2012 – 4:19 pm
Fulong Beach

I had a much better night last night. I decided to stay in Fulong for another night and asked about that at the hotel. My room, however, had been rented out already. I figured that would be the case, and I hadn’t gotten my hopes up. Luckily, they had other rooms that were still available and luckier still, they were free right now and in …

Dolphin-Watching at Wushih Harbor, Taiwan (Day 1 of 3)

July 21, 2012 – 4:13 pm
Dolphin-Watching Boat

I went to type out the date for this journal entry, and I was stumped at the year. Was it 2015? 2016? I had trouble remembering for a while. That’s how tired I am this morning after the adventures of yesterday.
I was up early yesterday morning – at 5:00 a.m. – in order to get a jump on the day. I wanted to be on …

Dragon Boat Festival Taipei – 2012

June 24, 2012 – 6:39 pm
Dragon Boat Festival

These pictures were taken during the Dragon Boat Festival races in Taipei in 2012. They took place at the Diaja Riverside Park in Taipei. Luckily, this park is relatively close to where I live and I could walk there along the river with my camera in hand. I could even take pictures from up on the bridge over the river. I was surprised that there were so few people up there.

Railways and Polar Bears at the National Taiwan Museum

Come to Our Future

Three new exhibits have opened at the National Taiwan Museum in Taipei. On the first floor, there is an exhibit that all kids are sure to like. It’s called Come to our Future: Climate Change Exhibition. You can pretty much guess what it’s all about from the name. With plenty of hands-on installations, it examines the impact that the human race is having on the …

Two More Film Festivals in Taipei this Summer

May 20, 2012 – 4:43 pm
World Cinema Highlights Film Festival

For those movie-lovers keeping track and chomping at the bit for more, there are two more film festivals on the horizon for Taipei.
The first is being put on by CatchPlay Classics and runs from May 25th to June 15th. I believe it is called World Cinema Highlights, and they are showing 23 official selections from famous film festivals around the world including Cannes, Berlinale, Venice, …

“The Golden Child” at the Spot Taipei Film House

May 20, 2012 – 9:54 am
The Golden Child

The Golden Child is currently playing at the Spot Taipei Film House as part of their event We Are Family: Festival of New Immigrants. (See the schedule here.) Four films make up this mini-festival, and they all focus on the experiences of women from China, Vietnam, and Indonesia who come to Taiwan to marry Taiwanese men. The first two films I’ve seen were The Happy …

“Monkey the Great” at the Red House Theater

May 19, 2012 – 3:53 pm
Monkey the Great

I’ve had my eye on the Red House Theater in Ximindeng for a long time. I didn’t even know it was there when I first dropped in on the Red House. For anyone that doesn’t know, the Red House is a beautiful historic building in the Ximending area. As you come out of the Ximen MRT station, you find yourself at a very large and …
